iPhones hog much more data than other smart phones

On average, iPhone users consume 273 MBs of data per month. That compares with 54 MBs for consumer users of Blackberrys and 150 MBs for consumers who use other brands of smart phones. Another 12 percent of iPhone users use at least 500 MBs per month with their crush of emails, Web surfing, and other activity related to the device’s more than 100,000 available software applications. And about a third of those data junkies use more than 1 GB of data.

More than 80 percent of non-business Blackberry users eat up less than 50 MB of data per month. Most users of other non-iPhone, non-Blackberry smart phones, 54 percent, similarly consume less than 50 MB of data each month. But fewer than 20 percent of iPhone owners are so frugal with their data consumption.

Mobile web consumption grows 148% worldwide in 2009

  • North American mobile web consumption increased 110 percent in 2009
  • Worldwide access grew 148 percent in 2009
  • Mobile devices now represent 1.3 percent of all web pageviews in North America, with Apple’s iPhone operating system accounting for 65.1 percent of mobile web traffic in the region–Google’s Android OS is second at 12.4 percent, followed by Research In Motion’s BlackBerry OS at 8.7 percent.

  • US cellphone users (about 285 million subscriptions) represent only 7% of the global subscriber base of 4.6 Billion.
  • While Americans are now getting heavily into smartphones, Forrester.reported that the total installed base of smartphones in the USA is only 17%. The EU projects that for the EU region, smartphones will be half of all phones this year.
  • A couple of years ago, the Symbian operating system was owned across several giant handset makers (Nokia part owned with SonyEricsson, Samsung, Motorola etc) and had over 60% market share. Now being only Nokia’s owned operating system, its installed base is about 50% of the world’s smartphones and currently sell a little over 40% of the world’s smartphones.
  • 75% of American business/enterprise smartphones are Blackberries (says Ostermann survey in 2009)
  • Today one in five smartphones sold – actually already 21% by the third quarter of 2009 – was a Blackberry. Remember that only 17% of smartphones are Apple iPhones.
  • A survey by TBI Research in 2009 found that 80% of US businesses refuse to have more than one operating system for smartphones – and in most cases that is now the Blackberry.
  • Out of all iPhones ever sold, 43% have been activated by AT&T
  • HTC is the fourth largest smartphone maker with about 5% of the market.
  • HTC CEO said in 2009 that 80% of all WinMo phones ever made, were manufactured by HTC.
  • Samsung had previously held something like 3% market share in smartphones, but – in feature phones with touch screens – they already outsell the iPhone.
  • Motorola’s global handset market share has been in total freefall for years – they have gone from 22% to 5% in three years.
  • Palm sells only about 800,000 smartphones per year

Smartphone Trends YE 2009

  • Smartphones continued to grow at their 2008 pace. That in itself is pretty impressive, since technologies that are in their initial phase of adoption – which, at 11% of adult US subscribers at the end of 2008, smartphones were – usually exhibit gaudy growth rates that decline precipitously as the base expands. Smartphones reached 17% share of US adult subs, up from 11% at the end of 2008 and 7% a year earlier.
  • BlackBerry still dominates in smartphones. Yes, despite Apple getting all the attention, even in a market segment that grew by more than half, RIM maintained its two-to-one advantage over the iPhone. Certainly broad availability across all operators and a range of form factors and prices helps, but also some people just want a keyboard, full stop.
