The End of the Landline

June 11th, 2010

22.9 percent of U.S. adults have a wireless phone at home but no landline.

  • Two of every nine adults live in wireless-only homes as compared to two out of every 17 in 2006.
  • Although wireless-only adoption rates for survey respondents decrease dramatically after the age of 35, every age group shows an increase in wireless adoption over prior-year surveys.
  • The number of unemployed and retired adults using only a wireless phone has doubled to 20.2 percent from 10.3 percent since the midpoint of 2006.
  • Even among households with both landline and wireless service, 25.7 percent of calls were on wireless telephones, and the CDC considers such households “wireless mostly” due to their increased reliance on cell phones. They account for 16.3 percent of all households, up from 14.4 percent in the first half of 2008.

And 75 percent of those between the ages of 12 and 17 own a cell phone, up from the 45 percent in 2004.

Number of iPhones in Use

June 11th, 2010

AT&T’s numbers from late 2009 reveal that only 75% of all sold iPhones were in use. That proportion is declining every quarter. So its silly to suggest there are 85 million users of Apple iPhone compatible digital devices. If we use the 75% ratio from AT&T, the maximum is 64 million. In reality that is far below 60 million by now. Out of specifically iPhone models, out of 51 million sold so far, less than 38 million are in use (using same AT&T ratio).

App Stores on Different Platforms

April 16th, 2010

Mobile subscribers are downloading more apps than ever, says a new In-Stat report, released Wednesday. Apple and its App Store are seeing the most action, with iPhone and iPod Touch users downloading 2.4 times more apps than the other smartphone owners.

In-Stat found that $2, $5, and $10 seem to be psychological barriers, leading to limited demand between these price levels.

Report on Mobile Apps

April 16th, 2010

Based on 2009:

  • There were 7 Billion total downloads (remember Apple, with all its buzz and attention only did 2 Billion last year, and the other branded app stores are miniscure compared to it).
  • And the average cost across all apps (including free ones) is about 59 cents. Paid apps had an average price of $1.90.
  • The Asian market gets most downloads but the North American market earns most of the revenues.
  • North America makes most money per app, Europe second, Africa last.
  • There were 5.1 Billion free apps (generating ad revenues of 0.09 cents per app on average)
  • People downloaded 4 free apps on average globally, per active mobile data user per year.
  • We spend 3.14 dollars per year or 26 cents per month on average that we spend globally on paid mobile apps. By comparison, the world’s average spend on the most popular mobile data content type – ring tones – is 11 cents per subscriber across the whole global subscriber base (measured so, because essentially every phone and network and country can do ringing tones).
