Smartphone Survey

January 7th, 2010

From December 9-14 survey of 4,068 consumers:

  • Among respondents who currently own a smart phone, 4% say they’re currently using Google’s Android operating system – a 3-pt jump since our survey in September.
  • 21% of those planning to buy a smart phone in the next 90 days say they’d prefer to have the Android OS on their new phone – a monstrous 15-pt jump in just three months.

  • Three months ago Android OS was tied for last place in consumer preference among the major mobile operating systems. But since then it has surged into second place ahead of all competitors except the iPhone OS X (28%) – which remains the number one choice for operating systems, although down 4-pts from previously.
  • The RIM OS (18%; up 1-pt) is holding steady and the Palm OS/ Web OS (3%) and Windows Mobile (6%) are each down 3-pts since the September survey.

Forty-two percent of respondents now report they own a smart phone – up 3-pts since September.

Going forward, 12.8% of respondents say they plan on buying a smart phone in the next 90 days – the second highest percentage ever recorded in a ChangeWave survey.

comScore: Android Crashing the Smartphone Party

December 21st, 2009
  • Of those American consumers in the market for a smartphone, 17 percent are considering the purchase of an android-supported device in next three months, compared to 20 percent indicating they plan to purchase an iPhone.
  • Although Android’s share of the smartphone market is relatively small, it has quickly doubled in the past year to 3.5 percent in October 2009.
  • Users of the Apple iPhone were most likely to consume mobile media, with 94 percent of users doing so in September 2009, while 92 percent of Android device users, predominantly T-Mobile G1 users, engaged in mobile media activities, 12 percentage points higher than an average smartphone user.
  • Email was the only major activity in which iPhone users (87 percent) were far more likely to participate than Android users (63 percent).
  • In August 2009, just 22 percent of mobile users had heard of the Android, while in November 2009 this figure had reached 37 percent, largely prompted by the Verizon Droid advertising campaign launched in the fall.

AdMob: November Numbers

December 21st, 2009
  • Google’s open-source Android operating system accounted for more than one in four of the smartphone ads served in November by AdMob. That’s up from 20 percent in October.
  • Apple’s share of ad requests is twice as big — 55% — but Android traffic is eating into iPhone growth, rather than being pushed aside by the iPhone as happened to Nokia.

Parks: Mobile Internet and E-mail Services Jump in Popularity Among U.S. Consumers

December 8th, 2009

Adoption of non-text mobile data services has exceeded 40% of the more than 70 million U.S. broadband households with a mobile phone service, according to Parks Associates’ new consumer study.

Over one-fourth of mobile service users have adopted mobile Internet and e-mail services, eclipsing other mobile data ARPU drivers like mobile TV and music, indicating that carriers will have to win subscribers through more “practical” services first. The fast adoption of mobile social networking and navigation services, which have both exceeded 10%, also indicates carriers can be successful in deploying popular Web activities as revenue-generating data services on the mobile platform.

Smartphone penetration will exceed 30% of broadband households in 2009.

BIA/Kelsey/ConStat: Non-Voice Smartphone Usage Up Significantly

December 8th, 2009

Among mobile consumers surveyed in October, 18.5 percent searched the Internet for products or services in their local area, up from 15.6 percent in 2008. Almost 17 percent connected with a social network such as MySpace or Facebook, up from 9.6 percent in 2008.

Additional results from the study show a growing class of “heavy users” of non-voice services. For example, the percentage of users making more than 10 mobile Internet accesses per week continues to increase significantly, now representing over one-fifth of all mobile users. Among mobile users, 48.2 percent sent or received more than 10 text messages per week, 21 percent had more than 10 Internet accesses per week and 20 percent sent or received more than 10 e-mails per week.

Samsung: ‘Feature phone users want apps too!’

December 8th, 2009

42% of current feature-phone users (note, not smartphones) would pay to download applications if they could, and that 54% of those would be prepared to pay up to £5 per app.

Samsung also asked users of these phones who haven’t downloaded apps before what genres they’re interested in. 34% said travel and navigation, 12% said photography, 11% said work and 9% said shopping.

The company has also been canvassing current smartphone users, finding that 70% of women surveyed say they play games, compared to 57% of men.

Demand for apps designed for parents has overtaken those for social networking though, based on 57% of women saying they use apps ‘to enrich their family life’, while only 39% use social networking apps.

43% of app users say that they quickly lose interest in apps that they download.

IDC: App Boom and Other Mobile Growth

December 7th, 2009

IDC predicts there will be at least 300,000 iPhone applications by Q1 2011.

There something like 10,000 Windows PC applications listed on Microsoft’s Windows 7 compatibility Web site. That contrasts with over 100,000 iPhone apps listed on Apple’s iTunes store – up from 10,000 in 2008.

IDC predicts that the mobile Net will start catching up with the fixed web. There will be over 1 billion mobile devices accessing the Internet by Q1 2011, gaining quickly on the 1.3 billion PCs accessing the Internet. Mobile is growing at 2.5 times the rate of PC based connections.

Over 200 million of these devices — which are distinguished by their ability to run third-party applications — will ship in 2010, representing 16 per cent of the market.

IDC predicts that by 2013, they will account for over 20 per cent. Look for more sub-$150 smartphones to come on the scene in 2010, accelerating the market.
